Kingston SSD data recovery. From the A400 in half the budget PCs in Britain to the KC3000.

Kingston sells more budget SSDs than almost anyone, and the A400 is the drive we see most often reporting SATAFIRM S11, because so many of them carry the Phison S11 controller. Kingston uses Phison and Silicon Motion silicon and changes parts between batches, which it has said openly: at CES 2017 it told the press the A400 would move to a Marvell controller and different flash while keeping its specifications. The NV-series does the same, so two NV2s bought a year apart can be different drives. One Kingston SSD is £300 + VAT after the free look, fixed in writing, 3–5 days at the bench, and on most jobs no data means no bill.

What tends to go wrong on a Kingston.

A400 and SATAFIRM S11The most common source of the SATAFIRM S11 fault we see: a Phison S11 that cannot validate its firmware and drops into ROM mode. Recoverable; the factory tool is not the answer.
A400 parts changed mid-life, 2017Kingston said at CES 2017 it would move the A400 to a Marvell controller with different flash while meeting the original specifications. Two A400s can therefore be two different drives, and the free look identifies which.
A2000 deepest sleep state on LinuxThe Linux kernel added a workaround to avoid the A2000's deepest power state after drives dropped out on resume; Kingston's later firmware addressed it. A quirk, not a data-loss fault.
SSDNow V100 firmware advisory, 2011Kingston strongly recommended a firmware update for all SSDNow V100 drives to prevent possible data loss. Legacy now, and a reminder that firmware is where these drives fail.
General pattern: NV-series revisionsNo documented fault was found for the KC3000 or the NV2 and NV3. The pattern with the NV-series is that the controller and flash change between batches, so behaviour and recovery route vary drive by drive.

Packing it and posting it: a bare SSD travels in an anti-static bag inside a small padded box, with nothing able to move. Insure it for what the files are worth rather than the price of the drive, and use a tracked service. The posting address is not printed anywhere on this site; it arrives by email in reply to the form, with a booking sheet to print; the sheet inside the parcel is what matches it to your enquiry when it is opened. Or hand the sealed parcel in at the nearest of ten drop-off points, your name on the outside and the sheet inside; say where you are on the form and it comes by email. We pay the postage home either way. The whole of it is written up on the guide to packing and posting.

Logged the day it lands, and the first look costs nothing Free

A case number goes on it the day the parcel is opened, and an engineer settles what has actually failed before anything else happens. The drive is read on our own equipment, never in a computer that might send it a TRIM command. Back to you come two things together: a straight note of what is liftable and what is not, plus one figure, fixed and written down. Accept it, or decline and owe us nothing.

Nothing to pay for lookingA single figure, put in writingNo TRIM, no writes
02

Powered on our terms

Every power-on gives a failing SSD another chance to run its own housekeeping. Here the drive is brought up in the controller's diagnostic state instead, which lets the bench speak to the flash directly and keeps damaged firmware out of the conversation.

Vendor diagnostic modeNo hopeful reboots
03

Past the fault, to the map

Working code is loaded into the controller's memory rather than onto the flash, the service area is read, and the translation table is rebuilt from what is there. Where the controller itself is dead, the chips are read one by one and the controller's scrambling and error correction are undone in software.

Loader in RAM, never on the flashMapping tables put back together
04

A full image, then the volume

Nothing is worked on live. The whole drive is imaged once, weak pages retried in their own passes, and the file system is put back together on the image. Encrypted volumes are unlocked there too, with the key you supply, and never on the original.

You see the file list before you pay

What was recovered is listed for you first, and only then does a bill exist. Approve the list and it is invoiced; turn it down and it is not — and where nothing has come back, most jobs carry no charge at all. Recovered data travels home on fresh media bought in for your job, with the postage at our end. Your case is not closed until you have opened the files on a machine of your own.

From the bench

  • Kingston SSD Manager will not help a drive in ROM mode. It talks through the operating system, which the drive is not talking to, and its firmware update writes to a drive that may not survive the write.
  • The A400's board changed more than once. The label does not say which revision it is; the controller on the board does, and the bench reads it.
  • The KC3000 and Fury Renegade are Phison E18 drives, well understood on the bench, with the E-series failures described on the NVMe page.
  • The forum fix ends the recovery. The Phison mass-production tools regenerate the drive and discard the map. If one has already been run, say so; a carve may still find a great deal.
  • No DRAM means an exposed map. The S11 keeps its whole translation table on the flash and rewrites parts of it constantly, which is why a bad shutdown so often leaves it in ROM mode.
  • One controller, a dozen badges. The method is the same whatever the label, which is why the name on the screen matters more than the name on the drive.

One job, followed all the way through.

A 480GB Kingston A400 that forgot its own name

A family PC stopped booting, and the BIOS listed the drive as SATAFIRM S11. Nothing had been run against it, which mattered. On the bench the controller took a loader into its RAM, the service area read back cleanly, and the translation table was rebuilt from it. Ten years of photographs and the household accounts came off in one pass.

What helps, and what harms.

Do this much first

  • Unplug it and leave it unplugged
  • Note the badge and the model number
  • Tell us if a tool has already been run
  • Send the bare drive in an anti-static bag

What sets us back

  • Running MPTool or any factory tool
  • Flashing firmware from the maker's site
  • Letting Windows initialise it
  • Trying it in one machine after another

Questions answered before you commit.

Why does my A400 say SATAFIRM S11?

Because its Phison S11 controller could not validate its firmware and has fallen back to its ROM, which reports its own name. The data is still on the flash. Unplug it, do not download the fix, and send the form.

Will Kingston recover my data?

No. Warranty replaces the drive. Recover the data first, then claim.

Is my NV2 the same as my friend's NV2?

Not necessarily. Kingston changes the controller and flash between batches on the NV-series. The free look identifies what is inside yours.

What does it cost?

£300 + VAT for one drive after the free look, fixed in writing.

How long does it take?

3–5 days at the bench after the free look.

Nothing gets worse while the power is off.

Looking at it is free. Back comes a list of what opened and what did not, together with a single price to finish, set down in writing while you are still free to say no. On most jobs an invoice only follows the data. Until that list reaches you, leave the drive switched off.
