Samsung SSD data recovery. Samsung makes every part of its own drives, and that decides how we recover them.

A Samsung SSD is unusual: the controller, the firmware, the DRAM and the flash are all Samsung's own. There is no Phison or Silicon Motion routine to borrow, and the drives encrypt in hardware whether or not you ever set a password, so recovery has to go through a working Samsung controller rather than around it. It usually can. Most Samsung drives we see have a firmware fault or a failing controller in front of perfectly readable V-NAND: a 980 Pro locked read-only by its firmware, an 870 EVO from an early batch with rising uncorrectable errors, a T7 that disconnects. One Samsung SSD, SATA, NVMe or portable, is £300 + VAT after the free look, the figure written down before any chargeable work, 3–5 days at the bench, and on most jobs no data means no bill.

What tends to go wrong on a Samsung.

980 Pro read-only, firmware 3B2QGXA7In early 2023 drives on this firmware could fail into a read-only state, the 2TB model most of all. Samsung's 5B2QGXA7 fixed it; drives on 4B2QGXA7 were not affected. A drive already locked should be imaged, not updated.
990 Pro health falling, early 2023Samsung acknowledged anomalies in the drive's reported wear and released firmware 1B2QJXD7 on 13 February 2023. The fix stops the decline; it does not restore the lost percentage.
840 EVO slow reads of old data, 2014–2015Files written months earlier read at a fraction of rated speed. Fixed by EXT0CB6Q with a restoration tool in October 2014, then EXT0DB6Q with Magician 4.6 in April 2015; the mSATA version waited until October 2015.
870 EVO early-batch errors, community-reportedOwners on the technical forums reported 2TB and 4TB drives made around early 2021 developing uncorrectable errors. Samsung has not published an advisory, so treat it as a community report. Rising Uncorrectable Error Count in SMART is the sign.
CounterfeitsA drive labelled Samsung that reports SATAFIRM S11 is not a Samsung. Samsung controllers never emit that string; a Phison controller inside a copy does.

Packing it and posting it: a bare SSD travels in an anti-static bag inside a small padded box, with nothing able to move. Insure it for what the files are worth rather than the price of the drive, and use a tracked service. The posting address is not printed anywhere on this site; it arrives by email in reply to the form, with a booking sheet to print; the sheet inside the parcel is what matches it to your enquiry when it is opened. Or hand the sealed parcel in at the nearest of ten drop-off points, your name on the outside and the sheet inside; say where you are on the form and it comes by email. We pay the postage home either way. The whole of it is written up on the guide to packing and posting.

Logged the day it lands, and the first look costs nothing Free

A case number goes on it the day the parcel is opened, and an engineer settles what has actually failed before anything else happens. The drive is read on our own equipment, never in a computer that might send it a TRIM command. Back to you come two things together: a straight note of what is liftable and what is not, plus one figure, fixed and written down. Accept it, or decline and owe us nothing.

Nothing to pay for lookingA single figure, put in writingNo TRIM, no writes
02

Powered on our terms

Every power-on gives a failing SSD another chance to run its own housekeeping. Here the drive is brought up in the controller's diagnostic state instead, which lets the bench speak to the flash directly and keeps damaged firmware out of the conversation.

Vendor diagnostic modeNo hopeful reboots
03

Past the fault, to the map

Working code is loaded into the controller's memory rather than onto the flash, the service area is read, and the translation table is rebuilt from what is there. Where the controller itself is dead, the chips are read one by one and the controller's scrambling and error correction are undone in software.

Loader in RAM, never on the flashMapping tables put back together
04

A full image, then the volume

Nothing is worked on live. The whole drive is imaged once, weak pages retried in their own passes, and the file system is put back together on the image. Encrypted volumes are unlocked there too, with the key you supply, and never on the original.

You see the file list before you pay

What was recovered is listed for you first, and only then does a bill exist. Approve the list and it is invoiced; turn it down and it is not — and where nothing has come back, most jobs carry no charge at all. Recovered data travels home on fresh media bought in for your job, with the postage at our end. Your case is not closed until you have opened the files on a machine of your own.

From the bench

  • Do not let Magician update firmware on a Samsung that is already misbehaving. Tom's Hardware put it plainly when the 990 Pro fix arrived: there is a small chance the update itself fails and leaves the drive inoperable. On a healthy drive after a backup, update; on a failing one, never.
  • Samsung drives encrypt everything in hardware. The flash read on its own is ciphertext, so recovery depends on the original controller, which is why chip-off is not the route here.
  • A Samsung bought far below the usual price from a marketplace may not be a Samsung. The name on the screen tells the truth the label did not.
  • In-house controllers encrypt in hardware, whether or not you ever set a password. The flash read on its own is ciphertext, so recovery runs through the original controller, which usually can be revived.
  • There is no third-party routine to borrow. The maker's own diagnostic state is the way in, and the bench knows it family by family.
  • Do not run the maker's tool on a drive already misbehaving. Its firmware update and its optimisation both write to the drive.

A 2TB 980 Pro on 3B2QGXA7, locked read-only mid-project

A video editor's desktop drive stopped accepting writes half-way through an edit, and Magician offered the firmware update. The owner asked first, which was the right call. The drive was imaged read-only in full in six hours, with the project files checked by opening them before anything was invoiced. Only then was the drive retired.

What helps, and what harms.

Do this much first

  • Note the firmware version if Magician still shows it
  • Power it off and leave it off
  • Tell us whether BitLocker or FileVault was on
  • Send a T7 with its cable

What sets us back

  • Running Secure Erase, Performance Optimization or a firmware update
  • Letting Windows initialise it
  • Buying an identical drive to swap the controller — it does not work that way
  • Trusting a marketplace Samsung that says S11

Questions answered before you commit.

Can a dead Samsung SSD be recovered?

Usually. Most failures are firmware or controller faults with the flash intact. Because Samsung encrypts in hardware, the work runs through the original controller, and it usually can be brought back far enough to read.

My 980 Pro went read-only. Is the data gone?

No. Read-only means the drive has stopped accepting writes, not that it has lost what is there. Stop using it and have it imaged before any update is attempted.

Is my 870 EVO one of the bad ones?

Rising Uncorrectable Error Count and ECC Error Rate in CrystalDiskInfo are the signs owners report. Back up at once; if files already fail to copy, send it.

Why won't Samsung recover my data under warranty?

Warranty replaces the drive, not the data. Recover first, then claim; a replacement is a new empty drive, and the old one goes back to Samsung.

What does it cost?

£300 + VAT for one drive after the free look, fixed in writing before any chargeable work.

Samsung built every part of it.

That makes the drive predictable, and we know what to expect of it. The first look is free, and the figure is in writing before any chargeable work.
