SDR / Every kind of SSD / SATA 2.5-inch

2.5-inch · SATA 6Gb/s · 7mm and 9.5mm

2.5-inch SATA SSD data recovery. The most ordinary SSD there is, and the one most likely to call itself something else.

The small 2.5-inch box is the SSD that replaced the laptop hard disk, and millions are still at work in desktops, older laptops, consoles and NAS units. At this end of the market a handful of controller makers — chiefly Phison, Silicon Motion, Samsung, Marvell and Realtek — sit behind dozens of badges. When a budget SATA drive fails, it very often fails as its controller rather than as its brand: a Kingston A400, a Patriot Burst and a Silicon Power S55 all report SATAFIRM S11 for the same reason. A single SATA SSD is £300 + VAT after the free look, the figure in writing before any chargeable work, 3–5 days at the bench, and no data means no bill on most jobs.

Packing it and posting it: a bare SSD travels in an anti-static bag inside a small padded box, with nothing able to move. Insure it for what the files are worth rather than the price of the drive, and use a tracked service. The posting address is not printed anywhere on this site; it arrives by email in reply to the form, with a booking sheet to print; the sheet inside the parcel is what matches it to your enquiry when it is opened. Or hand the sealed parcel in at the nearest of ten drop-off points, your name on the outside and the sheet inside; say where you are on the form and it comes by email. We pay the postage home either way. The whole of it is written up on the guide to packing and posting.

Samsung 860 and 870 EVOIn-house controllers on Samsung's own flash. Owners have reported a run of 870 EVOs from early 2021 developing uncorrectable errors; Samsung has not published an advisory, so treat it as a community report.
Crucial MX500 and BX500Silicon Motion controllers on Micron flash. The MX500 has a long-known quirk where the pending-sector count flicks between 0 and 1; a reporting oddity, not a failure.
Intel 320 and the older drivesThe 320 made 8MB famous: after a power cut the drive reported 8MB and a serial number of BAD_CTX. The data was still on the flash. Older SandForce drives from OCZ and Corsair fail in their own ways.

Logged the day it lands, and the first look costs nothing Free

A case number goes on it the day the parcel is opened, and an engineer settles what has actually failed before anything else happens. The drive is read on our own equipment, never in a computer that might send it a TRIM command. Back to you come two things together: a straight note of what is liftable and what is not, plus one figure, fixed and written down. Accept it, or decline and owe us nothing.

Nothing to pay for lookingA single figure, put in writingNo TRIM, no writes
02

Powered on our terms

Every power-on gives a failing SSD another chance to run its own housekeeping. Here the drive is brought up in the controller's diagnostic state instead, which lets the bench speak to the flash directly and keeps damaged firmware out of the conversation.

Vendor diagnostic modeNo hopeful reboots
03

Past the fault, to the map

On a SATA drive the controller is dropped into its diagnostic state through the SATA port, a temporary loader goes into its RAM, and the map is rebuilt from the service area. Nothing is written to the flash. Where the controller is dead the chips come off and are read directly, with the interleaving and scrambling undone in software.

04

A full image, then the volume

Nothing is worked on live. The whole drive is imaged once, weak pages retried in their own passes, and the file system is put back together on the image. Encrypted volumes are unlocked there too, with the key you supply, and never on the original.

You see the file list before you pay

What was recovered is listed for you first, and only then does a bill exist. Approve the list and it is invoiced; turn it down and it is not — and where nothing has come back, most jobs carry no charge at all. Recovered data travels home on fresh media bought in for your job, with the postage at our end. Your case is not closed until you have opened the files on a machine of your own.

What arrives most often

  • Budget SATA drives often carry no DRAM, so their map lives on the same flash as your files and is more exposed. A power cut in the middle of a map update is one of the classic ways such a drive loses everything at once.
  • A drive that has been fixed with a factory tool and now shows its full size but is empty has been initialised. The old map is gone with it. The tools advertised for SATAFIRM S11 regenerate the drive; they do not repair it.
  • Genuine Samsung drives never report SATAFIRM S11. A drive with a Samsung label that does is a counterfeit with a Phison controller inside, and it is recovered as a Phison drive.
  • SMART on an SSD is a claim, not a measurement. The health figure is whatever the controller decided to report, and it is worthless once the tables underneath have broken.

A 480GB Kingston A400 that forgot its own name

A family PC stopped booting, and the BIOS listed the drive as SATAFIRM S11. Nothing had been run against it, which mattered. On the bench the controller took a loader into its RAM, the service area read back cleanly, and the translation table was rebuilt from it. Ten years of photographs and the household accounts came off in one pass.

What helps, and what harms.

Do this much first

  • Leave it unplugged from the moment it misbehaves
  • Note the exact model number on the label
  • Tell us whether BitLocker or FileVault was on
  • The bare drive travels — out of any caddy or bracket

What sets us back

  • Downloading MPTool or any S11 fix
  • Letting Windows initialise or format it
  • Running a full scan with recovery software
  • Trying it in one machine after another

Questions answered before you commit.

Is SATAFIRM S11 a virus?

No. It is the name the Phison PS3111-S11 controller gives itself when it cannot load its own firmware and drops into ROM mode. Nothing has been infected; the drive is simply reporting the chip instead of the badge. There is a whole page on it under symptoms.

Can a 2.5-inch SSD be repaired and used again?

We recover the data. We do not recommend trusting the drive again, and we say so on the file list that goes back with the job.

Why does my Samsung say SATAFIRM S11?

Because it is very probably not a Samsung. Samsung controllers never emit that string; a counterfeit with a Phison controller inside does. The data is still recoverable, as a Phison drive.

Can I use a USB adapter to read it?

Only if the drive is healthy. A drive that is failing behaves differently through a bridge, and the bridge hides the messages we need. Send it in bare.

How long does it take?

3–5 days at the bench after the free look, for one drive.

Nothing gets worse while the power is off.

Looking at it is free. Back comes a list of what opened and what did not, together with a single price to finish, set down in writing while you are still free to say no. On most jobs an invoice only follows the data. Until that list reaches you, leave the drive switched off.
