SDR / Every kind of SSD / eMMC and UFS

Soldered flash · tablets, Chromebooks, small PCs · not phones

eMMC and UFS storage in small devices. Not phones — we do not take phones.

eMMC is a controller and flash in one package, soldered to the board, and common in budget laptops, Chromebooks, tablets and the small PCs sold as media boxes and thin clients. UFS is its faster successor and is appearing in the same places. Both can sometimes be read directly from the package when the board has failed, unless the device encrypts its storage with a hardware-bound key, as ChromeOS and modern Android tablets do, in which case the board has to work. We take eMMC and UFS from laptops, small PCs and some tablets. We do not handle mobile phones; please use a phone specialist. A single device is £300 + VAT after the free look, fixed in writing.

Small-device symptoms, and what each means.

Packing it and posting it: a bare SSD travels in an anti-static bag inside a small padded box, with nothing able to move. Insure it for what the files are worth rather than the price of the drive, and use a tracked service. The posting address is not printed anywhere on this site; it arrives by email in reply to the form, with a booking sheet to print; the sheet inside the parcel is what matches it to your enquiry when it is opened. Or hand the sealed parcel in at the nearest of ten drop-off points, your name on the outside and the sheet inside; say where you are on the form and it comes by email. We pay the postage home either way. The whole of it is written up on the guide to packing and posting.

Device by device, and what is possible.

Windows laptops with eMMCBudget machines from HP, Lenovo, Acer and ASUS with 32GB to 128GB of eMMC. Usually readable direct from the package when the board dies, then BitLocker or device encryption unlocked on the image if it was on.
ChromebooksChromeOS encrypts each user's data with keys tied to the security chip. A working board and the user's sign-in are needed; a dead board usually means the data is out of reach. We say so at the free look.
Windows and Android tabletsWindows tablets are recovered like laptops. Android tablets with file-based encryption need the board and the lock code; we take these case by case and tell you first.
Media boxes, thin clients, industrial boardsOften unencrypted eMMC that reads cleanly once the package is reached.

Logged the day it lands, and the first look costs nothing Free

A case number goes on it the day the parcel is opened, and an engineer settles what has actually failed before anything else happens. The drive is read on our own equipment, never in a computer that might send it a TRIM command. Back to you come two things together: a straight note of what is liftable and what is not, plus one figure, fixed and written down. Accept it, or decline and owe us nothing.

Nothing to pay for lookingA single figure, put in writingNo TRIM, no writes
02

Powered on our terms

Every power-on gives a failing SSD another chance to run its own housekeeping. Here the drive is brought up in the controller's diagnostic state instead, which lets the bench speak to the flash directly and keeps damaged firmware out of the conversation.

Vendor diagnostic modeNo hopeful reboots
03

Past the fault, to the map

Where the device does not bind its storage to the processor, the eMMC or UFS package is read directly at its pads, the dump is rebuilt into a volume and any operating-system encryption is unlocked on the image with your credentials. Where the device does bind its storage, the board is repaired to the point of unlocking, or the job is declined at the free look.

04

A full image, then the volume

Nothing is worked on live. The whole drive is imaged once, weak pages retried in their own passes, and the file system is put back together on the image. Encrypted volumes are unlocked there too, with the key you supply, and never on the original.

You see the file list before you pay

What was recovered is listed for you first, and only then does a bill exist. Approve the list and it is invoiced; turn it down and it is not — and where nothing has come back, most jobs carry no charge at all. Recovered data travels home on fresh media bought in for your job, with the postage at our end. Your case is not closed until you have opened the files on a machine of your own.

What arrives most often

  • eMMC is a drive in a chip. It carries its own small controller, which is why it can often be read in place or at the pads when the rest of the board has died. UFS is similar and faster, and appears in newer Chromebooks and tablets.
  • A Chromebook without its board is a box of ciphertext. ChromeOS ties user data to the security chip, so we need the board running and your sign-in. A powerwash removes the keys and the data with them.
  • Device encryption is often on without anybody choosing it. Windows tablets and budget laptops signed into a Microsoft account frequently have it on, and the recovery key is in that account.
  • Mobile phones are not handled here at all, whichever make. A phone specialist has the right tooling, and we would rather send you to one than take a job we cannot do well.

One job, followed all the way through.

A 64GB eMMC budget laptop with a dead board and a student's year of notes

The machine had stopped charging and then stopped entirely. The eMMC package was read directly at the pads, the dump rebuilt into an NTFS volume, and device encryption unlocked on the image with the recovery key from the student's Microsoft account. The notes, the essays and the photos all opened.

What helps, and what harms.

Do this much first

  • Find the Microsoft, Google or device sign-in before posting
  • Send the whole device, switched off
  • Tell us if it has been reset
  • Say what matters most on the form

What sets us back

  • Factory-resetting or powerwashing it
  • Trying a repair shop's board swap first
  • Sending a mobile phone
  • Charging it repeatedly to see whether it comes back

Questions answered before you commit.

Can you do my phone?

No. We do not handle mobile phones of any make. A phone specialist is the right place.

Can you do a Chromebook?

Case by case. ChromeOS encrypts user data with keys tied to the security chip, so a working board and your sign-in are needed. We say at the free look whether yours is possible.

My tablet will not boot. Is the data still there?

Often, yes. The free look tells us whether the package can be read directly or whether the board has to be revived first.

What does it cost?

£300 + VAT for one device after the free look, fixed in writing.

Nothing gets worse while the power is off.

Looking at it is free. Back comes a list of what opened and what did not, together with a single price to finish, set down in writing while you are still free to say no. On most jobs an invoice only follows the data. Until that list reaches you, leave the drive switched off.
